Twitter Memes: The Worst Thing Since AIDS?

Trending Topics had been one of the things about Twitter I actually liked. Every once in a while I’ll be sitting at my desk oblivious to the world around me when I’ll see something like say, Michael Jackson pop in there. Why that’s odd, i’ll think, I wonder why on Earth is…oh. That’s the kind of phenomena that makes me fall in love with the Internet all over again.

But more and more Trending Topics seems to be dominated by some of the most ridiculous shit I have ever read. Over the last week, #youknowyouruglyif and #arealwife have sat in the space like they own it. Carrie Prejean, #indiemoviecliches and #rememberdecember came and went but these are still dominating.

A few things I have learned today:

HR Social Media Ploys Already Rolling In

Sure enough, just two days after the LinkedIn-Twitter partnership was announced, it came: an invitation to a webinar on using social media for recruiters. I don’t know why I got this email since I am not a recruiter and do not work in HR. The closest I come to making a hiring decision is saying things like, “Really? You want to hire the one with the twitchy eye?” when my boss is thinking things over.

Anyway, for just $69 you can sit at your desk with some headphones and learn the answers to mind-boggling questions like

What is “Web 2.0″ and what can it do for my business?
Which social networking sites are the most effective for recruiters-and why?
Will having an account on LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook help me become the recruiter of choice in my talent community?
How can I enhance my online presence to make it easier for clients and candidates to find me?
How much time should I devote to social media? (The answer is: Less than you think!)

Just in case you’d planned on finding the new CFO via her band’s MySpace page.

Mwahaha: Twitter in Decline!

The world must be running out of lemming-like marketing professionals because ComScore Inc., media metrics people who first discovered that young, tech-savvy people don’t really like Twitter much, has announced that U.S. Twitter visitors have dropped for the second month in a row, with more than 1.7 million fewer users heading to the site.

You’re probably thinking, right so that’s just because everyone and their mother has already joined. But use of Facebook–which even my grandma is on now–went up 2 percent in October, so…

At least this has inspired them to roll out a few long-overdue features to improve usability such as a Retweet button.

Reid Hoffman and Biz Stone talk “Twitter #in”, Physically Manifest Products

Here’s a promo for the LinkedIn-Twitter synchronization where respective co-founders Reid Hoffman and Biz Stone talk about their partnership and raise anxiety among white collar professionals about whether they’ve yet to pinpoint a personal “Twitter brand strategy.”

Is it just me or is this just a little too close to looking like an “I’m a Mac. I’m a PC” commercial?

Could Reid Hoffman look anymore like a paunchy business dude trying to inject himself with a little cool (nice upgrade on the glasses btw!)? Could Biz Stone look any more like a hipster douchebag trying to convince his boss he’s the cool new tech kid that’ll help them from falling off the bleeding edge?

Twitter + LinkedIn: Pretend This Is Groundbreaking

The Web (and my office) is abuzz with news that Twitter and resume-posting service LinkedIn are joining forces today. This is remarkable because 1. it took them this long to insert a very obvious Tab A into Tab B and 2.

LinkedIn’s 51 million members will now be able to send status updates — such as the fact that they are looking for an analyst on a certain topic, or posting a job opening — to Twitter on a case-by-case basis, and vice versa.

So basically they’ll be able to do what they were also able to do via LinkedIn’s status update feature only a few people might actually see it. Predictions? No big change in hiring/networking practices (I already know two people who have gotten jobs through the Twitter grapevine) but HR departments will now hire a social media consultant to ensure their hiring manager is “fluent in Web 2.0.” And able to sort through 30,000 resumes in a single evening.
